사진의 연금술 The Alchemy of Photography
옛 연금술사들에게 물, 불, 흙, 공기 네 가지 원소는 물질세계의 근원입니다.
그들이 찾던 ‘철학자의 돌’ 또는 ‘현자의 돌’이라 불리는 그것은, 아무것도 아닌 물질을 금으로 변화시키는 신비의 질료를 뜻한다고 합니다.
비록 실패한 과학이지만 연금술은 대립되고 모순된 가치가 함께 공존하여 에너지가 되는 창조성을 상징하기에 현대의 시인과 예술가에게는 아직도 흥미로운 주술입니다.
전시에 함께하는 네 명의 사진가는 각자의 삶의 깊이를 사진 매체를 통해 연마한 아름다운 결과물로 보여줍니다.
이들은 동시대를 살아가는 예술가이자 철학자로서 우리에게 진지한 삶의 질문을 던집니다.
For ancient alchemists, the four elements—water, air, earth, fire—formed the origins of the material world. The legendary “Philosopher’s Stone” they sought was a mysterious material that could transform base metals into gold. Though a failed science, alchemy still intrigues today’s poets and artists. It symbolizes a creativity in which confronting and contradictory values mingle to become energy. The four photographers taking part in the exhibition present their rich life experiences as polished products through the photographic medium. As contemporary artists and philosophers, they challenge us with relevant questions about the nature of life today.
빌레 칸사넨 Ville Kansanen
Ville Kansanen is a Finnish artist based in California. He works with photography, sculpture, video and land art. Seduced by the mysterious landscapes of the desert where nature is boundless, Ville Kansanen carries out site-specific installation engineered with staged photography. Here, the desert, considered to be the origin of fixed existence, leads one to meditate on ideas of circulation in nature, and summons humans as spiritual beings who dream of eternity.
핀란드 태생의 샌프란시스코에서 활동하는 작가로, 사진, 영상, 조각, 대지예술을 다루고 있습니다. 작가는 거대한 자연이자 신비한 풍경인 사막에 매료되어 일종의 장소특정적 설치 작업을 진행하고, 이를 연출 사진으로 선보입니다. 고정된 존재의 근원으로 여겨지는 사막은 작가의 작업을 통해 자연의 순환에 대한 명상으로 이어지며 다시 영원을 꿈꾸는 영적인 존재로 인간을 소환합니다.

Gretchen LeMaistre explores the complicated and sometimes troubling ways in which we humans relate to the land and environments that sustain us. Tidemarks series captures clear traces of the tides, while her Haptics series weds light and matter, overlapping personal history and the history of place with experimental photographs that convey hidden narratives, Arrangement in Grey and Black series includes herself, and generally represent grappling with the legacy of social issues.
그레첸 르마이스트레는 자연, 환경과 관련된 인류 문제에 깊은 관심을 가지며 이를 사진 작품으로 해석하여 제시합니다. 조류의 명료한 흔적을 촬영한 <Tidemarks>시리즈와 서사가 감춰진 추상 사진으로 전환된 <Haptics>시리즈는 작가가 어린시절을 보낸 섬에 머물러 제작한 것으로 장소의 역사와 개인의 역사가 중첩된 작품입니다. <Arrangement in Grey and Black>시리즈 역시 사회적 이슈를 추상적으로 재현하였습니다.

다이앤 피어스 Diane Pierce
Diane Pierce thinks about the relationships between objects and drawing, logically or randomly selected, re-composing them photographically. The interaction of materials explored in her drawing process in informed by the element of chance. The translation of the third dimension (sculptural) to the second dimension (flat photographic picture-plane), in turn, becomes the four-dimensional space of imagination, unfolding before us.
다이앤 피어스는 이성적인 동시에 비이성적인 주변 사물의 관계성에 대해 고민하고 이를 사진적 방법으로 재구성합니다. 드로잉 과정에서 탐구한 재료들의 얽힌 관계는 사진을 통해 포착된 우연성으로 새로운 맥락을 이루며 2차원의 평면에서 3차원의 입체로, 다시 4차원 상상의 공간이 되어 우리 앞에 펼쳐집니다.

Rhonda Lashley Lopez, a fine art photographer with a background in journalism/photojournalism and education, is working in traditional and historic processes on projects that express life narrated by nature. Rhonda Lashley Lopez, captures on paper moments in the natural world with which she deeply identifies. Her delicate printing process, involving transferring the light of nature to common materials with gold plate or photo-chemical processes, is an act of alchemy.

연금술은 고귀한 것을 얻으려는 인간의 열정 그 자체를 의미하는지 모릅니다. 이성과 논리가 지배하는 현대 사회에서 아직도 예술가의 꿈을 발현시키는 상징으로서 연금술은 인간이 과학과 이성의 논리만으로 살아갈 수 없으며 자연과 예술, 영적인 상상력을 필요로 하는 존재임을 반증하고 있습니다. 2020년 유난히 힘든 봄을 맞으며 통제 불가능한 삶을 견디는 과정을 통해 얻어지는 것들을 기억할 수 있기를, 연단의 과정을 통해서만 얻을 수 있는 순도 높은 이상을 꿈꾸는 자에게 예술은 지혜의 샘이 되어줄 것입니다.
Perhaps alchemy is synonymous with the human urge to strive for what is noble. Today we are governed so much by reason and logic. Alchemy symbolizes the artist’s pure manifestation of imagination and dreams. We cannot thrive on logic and reason alone, but need nature, life, art and spiritual imagination to awaken, inspire and direct us. As we move through this extra-ordinarily difficult spring, 2020, hopefully we will remember what can be gained through the natural, ungovernable process of all-enduring life. For those who dream the pure dream that can only be realized through a process of tempering, art will serve as a fountain of wisdom.
