책이 있는 풍경은 차분한 울림을 전한다. 글을 읽지 않아도 그 존재감만으로 느껴지는 공기가 있다. 얇은 표면 위에 얹힌 글과 이미지, 그렇게 쌓인 종이의 무게에는 오랜 시간과 여러 장소에서 벼려진 작가의 생각이 담겨 있다. 책이 아름다운 사물이 될 수 있는 이유는 굳이 설명하지 않아도 수없이 많을 것이다.

좋은 이야기를 글로 풀어내는 일만큼이나 책의 형식과 재료가 지닌 고유한 결 또한 중요하다. 우리가 책을 경험하는 방식이 그만큼 다양하기 때문이다. 손으로 페이지를 넘기고, 펼치고, 눈으로 보고 생각하고 느낀다. 종이의 색과 질감, 무게와 밀도, 탄성을 읽고 해석하는 일. 서로 다른 재료를 엮어 조화로운 형식과 구조를 만들고, 이야기가 머무는 집을 짓는 일. 우리는 이러한 작업을 하는 숙련된 창작자를 북아티스트라 부른다.

가벼운 종이 한 장에 담긴 이야기들이 엮여 정신의 공간이 된다. 작가가 삶에서 마주한 호기심으로 시작하여 깊이 관찰하고 재구성한 이야기가 책이 된다. 책을 만드는 일에는 정답이 없다. 주어진 모든 가능성을 열어두고 하나씩 지워가는 선택의 과정이 있을 뿐이다. 그것은 무지의 구름 속을 지나, 희미한 막 너머에 존재하는 투명한 세계의 원형을 찾아가는 일인 것이다.

해 아래 새로운 것은 없다. 삶과 죽음이 교차되는 생의 시간은 끝이 예정되어 있다. 예술은 무한함을 이해하려는 유한한 인간의 노력에서 비롯된다. 순간을 담는 사진은 사라지는 아름다움을 애도하는 우리만의 방식이 되어준다. 이미 사라진 빛의 흔적에는 깊은 아름다움의 그림자가 남아 있다. 의미 없어 보이는 작은 순간이 어떤 시선으로 특별해지는 것은 사진이 가진 예술적 재능이다. 이러한 예술은 우리에게 고요한 위로의 빛을 나누어준다. 

종이와 책, 이는 인간 정신이 지닌 아름다움이 머무는 곳이다. 책의 경험은 고요한 모양을 띤다. 손으로 만지고 느끼는 일이 점점 줄어들고, 머물러 사유하는 여유를 갖기 어려워진 시대에 책이 있는 풍경은 그 모습만으로 위로와 안도감을 건넨다. 이 전시는 인간의 정신과 몸이 할 수 있는 가장 아름다운 일 가운데 하나가 책을 만드는 일이라는 것을 보여준다.

The presence of books carries a quiet resonance. Even before they are opened, they alter the atmosphere around them. Words and images rest upon fragile surfaces, yet within the accumulated weight of paper lie thoughts refined through years of looking, living, and wondering. There are countless reasons why a book may become a beautiful object, most of which resist explanation.

As important as the stories books contain are the forms through which they come into being. Every book offers a different way of being experienced. We turn its pages, unfold and close it, read, reflect, and feel. We sense the texture of paper, its weight, density, and resilience. We bring disparate materials into harmony and construct a dwelling place for thought. Those who devote themselves to this practice are known as book artists.

Stories carried on sheets of paper are woven together into a space for the mind. What begins as curiosity—a question encountered in the course of living—gradually takes shape through observation, reflection, and transformation. In making a book, there are no fixed answers, only a continual process of choosing and discarding, of narrowing infinite possibilities toward a single form. It is a passage through the unknown, a search for an archetype that exists beyond the visible world.  

The four artists participating in Transparency of Things each work with paper and light. Their curiosity, imagination, and attentiveness meet material form and, through skill and devotion, take shape as books. The books that emerge from this process possess the quiet clarity of finely cut gems, distilled to their essence. If transparency in art means removing all that is unnecessary so that the essential may reveal itself, then it may not be far from what Eastern aesthetics describes as purity and clarity of spirit, or from the fundamental questions that religion and philosophy have long contemplated. Perhaps books, and the act of making them, remain among the most intimate paths toward these enduring mysteries.

Paper and books are places where the beauty of the human spirit comes to rest. Their experience unfolds in silence. At a time when opportunities for tactile engagement are diminishing and sustained contemplation grows increasingly rare, the mere presence of books offers solace and reassurance. This exhibition suggests that one of the most beautiful acts of the human mind and body is the making of books.
