2026. 4. 4 Sat – 8. 2 Sun 빌레 칸사넨 Ville Kansanen 올해 첫 번째 프레임 전시는 빌레 칸사넨 작가의 개인전, 《NUMEN 뉴먼》이다. ‘뉴먼(NUMEN)’은 대상 또는 장소에 존재하는 정신성을 일컫는 말로, 작가의 대지예술 시리즈 작품 제목이자 전시 제목이다. 빌레 칸사넨은 빠르게 변화하는 현대사회의 흐름에 의문을 품고, 자연과 인간의 변치 않는 근원을 추적하며 설치, 사진 작업을 진행한다. 작가는 작업의 배경이 되는 장소로 사막을 택하는데, 그는 사막을 태고적부터 이어져온 물리적, 정신적 근원 공간으로 해석한다. 인류세 이전의 시공간으로써 사막을 배경에 두고, 자연 현상을 극적으로 감각할 수 있는 설치를 통해 인류의 본래적 경외감을 소환한다. 작가는 수천 년 전부터 인류가 역사적으로 반복 활용했던 거석의 기념비적 형태에 착안하는데, 돌, 나무, 밧줄 등의 소재를 활용하여 자신만의 방식으로 이 기념비적 형태를 재생산해낸다. 이로써 낮과 밤을 통과하여 발생하는 자연 현상의 절대적 순간을 포착하고, 최종적으로 사진 작업으로 남긴다. 빌레 칸사넨에게 사진은 대상과 장소에서 발생한 실제적 자연 현상을 수용하는 증거적 역할을 하는 동시에 그가 드러내고자 하는 정신성을 표출하는 명확한 근거로 동시에 역할한다. 때문에 그에게 사진은 다른 매체로 대체할 수 없는 작품의 주요한 도구이자 일부로 작동한다.《NUMEN 뉴먼》을 통해 우리는 오류와 피상이 난무하는 현시대의 사고의 풍요를 넘어, 간단하고 반복적인, 그러나 절대적이고 초월적인 자연의 힘을 마주할 수 있다. 이는 작가가 표현한, 과학과 비과학을 넘어선 어떤 경외에 이르는 순간이며, 놓쳐버린 자연과 인류의 근원이 다시 연결되는 감각이다. - 강민정 큐레이터 The first FRAME exhibition of the year presents NUMEN, a solo exhibition by Ville Kansanen. “Numen” refers to the spiritual presence residing within an object or a place. It is both the title of the artist’s land art series and the title of this exhibition. Kansanen questions the accelerating rhythms of contemporary society and traces the abiding origins of Nature and humanity through installation and photography. Kansanen selects the desert as the primary site of his practice, viewing it as a primordial space of physical and spiritual origin. Within this pre-Anthropocene landscape, his installations heighten the perception of natural phenomena, evoking humanity’s primordial reverence. Drawing inspiration from the monumental forms of megaliths—structures repeated across civilizations and millennia—he reinterprets these symbolic forms using materials such as stone, wood, and rope, capturing absolute moments of natural phenomena unfolding between day and night, ultimately preserved through photography. For Kansanen, photography functions as both documentation and expression, serving as evidence of natural phenomena arising within specific objects and places while articulating the spiritual dimension central to his work. Photography thus operates as an indispensable tool and an integral element of his practice.Through NUMEN, we move beyond the errors and superficiality that saturate the present era and encounter the simple and repetitive, yet absolute and transcendent forces of nature. Ville Kansanen(b. 1984) is a Finnish-born, self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in San Francisco, California. His practice centers on a profound exploration of the origins of nature and humanity. Working primarily in desert landscapes, Kansanen lives and travels by truck, creating site-specific land art installations that are ultimately presented through photography. Through this process, he seeks to rediscover the spiritual and existential relationship between humans and the natural world — a connection often lost in contemporary society. His work has been featured in publications including American Photo Magazine, GUP Magazine, SFAQ, and Diffusion Magazine. He is the recipient of the Hopper Prize and the Lucie Award.
