아름다움의 애가elegy of beauty 2026. 4. 4. sat - 2026. 8. 2. sunOpening Reception 4. 4. sat 2pm 온라인 전시 바로가기 Visit Online Exhibition 태양과 달이 만나는 일식은 우리가 살아가는 ‘지금, 이곳’과 거대한 우주가 하나로 정렬되는 순간을 보여준다. 이 드문 현상을 목격하거나 이미지를 통해 마주하는 경험은, 우리의 삶이 무한한 세계와 하나의 시점으로 연결되어 있음을 깨닫게 한다. 빛과 그림자가 만들어내는 원형의 에너지는 우주의 질서와 신비를 상징하며, 존재와 시간에 대한 사유로 우리를 이끈다. 전시 《아름다움의 애가》는 ‘아름다움이란 무엇인가’라는 질문에서 출발한다. 우리는 어떤 순간과 사물 앞에서 설명할 수 없는 감동을 느낄 때가 있다. 아름다움은 머리가 아닌 몸의 감각이 먼저 알아차리는 것이다. 그것은 내면 깊은 곳에서 동하는 합일의 경험이며, 명확한 기준이나 공식으로 설명할 수 없다. 작고 여린 생명의 순수함, 긴 시간을 견뎌낸 순도 높은 결정체, 단단한 구조와 조화로움, 비움과 채움이 이루는 균형, 그리고 정신적 숭고함과 어떤 초월성. 우리는 이 모든 빛과 그림자가 교차되는 시간 속에서 스스로 드러나는 자연의 질서를 ‘아름다움’으로 인식하는 것이 아닐까? 유한한 시간성 아래 존재하는 아름다움은 그리움이라는 감정을 불러온다. 사진은 사랑하는 이의 모습과 이 세상에서 마주한 풍경들을 우리 곁에 남겨준다. 린다 코너는 태양과 달, 그리고 지구가 그려내는 빛의 메시지를 인화지에 담아 우리에게 전달한다. 메리 다니엘 홉슨의 유리병 속에는 그녀가 소중히 여겨온 삶의 장소와 기도가 담겨 있다. 살 테일러 키드의 사진 작품은 존재의 아름다움을 보관하는 애도의 그릇이다. 크리스티나 맥폴의 사진 속 어린 두 아들은 대자연의 일부로 살아가는 법을 몸으로 배워가고 있다. 이 모든 것이 담긴 책은 그들이 못 다한 이야기들을 간직한 영혼의 집이 되어 독자를 초대하고 있다. 해 아래 새로운 것은 없다. 삶과 죽음이 교차되는 생의 시간은 끝이 예정되어 있다. 예술은 무한함을 이해하려는 유한한 인간의 노력에서 비롯된다. 순간을 담는 사진은 사라지는 아름다움을 애도하는 우리만의 방식이 되어준다. 이미 사라진 빛의 흔적에는 깊은 아름다움의 그림자가 남아 있다. 의미 없어 보이는 작은 순간이 어떤 시선으로 특별해지는 것은 사진이 가진 예술적 재능이다. 이러한 예술은 우리에게 고요한 위로의 빛을 나누어준다. 기획의 글_주상연 Within the constraints of time, beauty evokes longing. Photography preserves the faces of loved ones and the landscapes we encounter, allowing them to remain with us. In Linda Connor’s work, messages of light traced by the sun, moon, and earth are captured on photographic paper. In Mary Daniel Hobson’s glass jars, prayers for cherished places reside. In Sal Taylor Kidd’s photographic works, the artwork becomes a vessel of mourning, holding the beauty of what once existed. In Christina McFaul’s photographs, her two young sons learn through their bodies how to live as part of Nature. The artists’ books that house these works become homes for unfinished stories, inviting viewers inward. Nothing is new under the sun. Life unfolds at the intersection of birth and death—our finite destiny. Art arises from the human effort to understand the infinite. Photography becomes a way of mourning beauty’s passage through fleeting moments. Shadows of profound beauty remain as traces of vanished light. The seemingly insignificant can, through a certain gaze, become extraordinary—a testament to the power of photography. These works offer quiet solace and a light of renewed hope. A solar eclipse is a moment when the sun and moon align, revealing an instant in which our “here and now” converges with the vast universe. The exhibition elegy of beauty begins with a question: What is beauty? There are times when we are profoundly moved in ways that are inexplicable, stirred by a moment or an object. Beauty is first felt by the body before it is recognized by the mind. It is a deep inner harmony that eludes measure or formula. The purity of small and delicate life, crystalline strength forged over time, solidity of structure and harmony, the balance between emptiness and fullness, and spiritual sublimity with a sense of transcendence—all intersect. Might it be that, within this interplay of light and shadow, we perceive the self-revealing order of Nature as “beauty”? Sangyon Joo_Director 메리 다니엘 홉슨은 미국 출신의 사진가로 미술사와 사진사를 전공하고 전시, 강의, 출판 등 다양한 영역에서 활동하고 있다. 초현실주의에 대한 관심으로 혼합 재료를 콜라주하며 다의적이고 복합적인 내적 경험을 탐구한다. 현재까지 19회의 개인전을 열었으며, 한국 닻미술관, 미국 매사추세츠 그리핀 미술관, 캘리포니아 볼리나스 미술관 등에서 단체전을 하였다. 뉴 멕시코 앨버커키 미술관과 샌프란시스코 현대 미술관 등에 작품이 소장돼 있으며 주요 작품집으로 『The Man in Bogotá』(Pacific Editions, 2015), 『Offerings』(닻프레스, 2019) 등이 있다. Mary Daniel Hobson is a U.S.-based photographer with a background in Art History and the History of Photography. She has been actively engaged in the field of photographic art through exhibitions, teaching, and publishing. Influenced by her interest in surrealism, she explores layered and complex inner experiences by collaging various materials. She has held 19 solo exhibitions and has participated in international group exhibitions, including Datz Museum of Art, Griffin Museum of Photography, and Bolinas Museum. Her work is held in the collections of institutions, including the Albuquerque Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Linda Connor is a photographer whose work is shaped by a deep reverence for nature and a strong curiosity about human civilizations. Her photographic practice focuses on the transcendent power of nature, historical sites, and sacred art. She has exhibited in more than 70 solo exhibitions internationally. Her photographs are collected by more than 40 major museums worldwide, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. She served as a professor at the San Francisco Art Institute for 40 years. She is also the founder of the nonprofit organization PhotoAlliance, through which she has played an important role in the international photographic art scene. Christina McFaul is a photographer with a background in Interior Design. She currently lives and works in San Diego. Her photographic work captures the primal bond between humans and nature, emphasizing an essential connection with the natural world. In 2023, she obtained Nature and Forest Therapy Guide certification from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. She has been actively engaged in fostering the relationship between people and nature, emphasizing the importance of preserving our planet. Her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions internationally, including in the United States and Europe. Her monograph Sanctuary in the Wild was published by Datz Press in 2024. 살 테일러 키드는 영국 출신으로 현대 언어와 사진을 전공하고, 사진가이자 시인으로 활동한다. 키드는 개인의 역사가 담긴 장소에서 발견된 시간의 흔적에 관심을 갖고 작업한다. 시와 사진을 함께 담은 책을 직접 제작하며, 대표적으로 레터프래스 북 『The Call』을 출간했다. 미국 게티 센터와 뉴잉글랜드 대학 등에 출판물이 소장되어 있고, 미국, 멕시코, 스페인 등 여러 나라에서 전시를 하였다. 주요 작품집으로는 『LANDFALL』(닻프레스, 2020), 『YESTERDAY』(닻프레스, 2021) 등이 있으며 『In The Midday Silver』(닻프레스)가 2026년 출간될 예정이다. Sal Taylor Kydd is a UK-born photographic artist and writer. She has a background in Modern Languages and Photography. Her work explores traces of time that emerge from places of personal history. She makes artist books that combine poems and photographs, and has notably published the letterpress book The Call. Her monographs are held in collections, including the Getty Museum and the Maine Women Writers Collection at the University of New England. Her work has been shown internationally, including in the United States, Mexico, and Spain.
