구름의 노래

누구나 구름을 찍는다. 

사라질 순간이기에, 

유일한 그 빛을 기억하기 위해, 

내 안의 어떤 감정과 닮았기에. 

추상을 이해하기 위해, 

세계를 보고 있음을 확인하기 위해, 

무한을 숭배하는 마음으로, 

아름다움에 반하여, 

그냥 이유 없이.

미국 현대사진의 아버지라 불리는 알프레드 스티글리츠 Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946)에게는 10여 년 동안 찍은 흑백의 구름 시리즈가 있다. 이 시리즈의 제목은 초기엔 ‘Songs of the Sky’였고 후에 ‘Equivalents’라 부른다. 그의 구름 사진은 그냥 구름이 아니라, 추상에 가까운 음악이자, 흐르는 마음이었고, 그의 내면세계였다. 이 작업은 사진이 구체적인 소재를 기록하는 도구를 넘어서, 보이지 않는 세계를 은유하는 시각예술의 매체로 여겨지게 되는 중요한 계기가 된다. 

이곳에 12명의 사진가가 찍은 각기 다른 시간과 장소의 구름들을 모았다. 잡을 수 없는 형태와 흐르는 시간을 사진틀에 넣고 프레임이라는 장소에 담았다. 하늘을 바라본 사진가들의 호흡이 빛의 화음을 만들고 있다. 긴 설명 필요 없이, 우리는 이 안에 들어와 그들의 구름을 만난다. 이 전시장을 나가면 펼쳐진 하늘이 눈앞에 다시 보일 것이다. 가끔은 구름 한 점 없이 맑은 날도 있다. 매일 보는 하늘인데 한순간도 같지 않다. 현실의 중력 아래서 잠시라도 비상하는 꿈을 불러보자. 어릴 적 하늘의 구름이 주던 상상의 놀이를 떠올릴 수 있어도 좋겠다.

Songs of the Sky - Photography and Clouds

Everyone photographs the clouds. 

To catch the moment that will soon disappear, 

to remember the momentary light, 

because it resembles our emotions within. 

To understand its abstraction, 

to confirm our gaze at the world, 

in worship of the infinite, 

in captivation of its beauty, 

or just because.

Widely recognized as the father of modern photography in the West, Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) has a black and white series of cloud photographs that span over a decade. This series was initially titled Songs of the Sky but was later referred to as Equivalents. His cloud photographs were not mere depictions of clouds; they were abstractions closer to musical compositions, representing his flowing thoughts, and his inner world. This series played an important role in establishing photography as an artistic medium capable of expressing the intangible, beyond its technical utility as a tool for documentation.

We have gathered clouds from distant times and places, captured by 12 photographers. The ungraspable shapes and fleeting time embedded in each photograph are collected inside ‘FRAME’ at Datz Museum of Art. Inside, individual breaths of each photographer looking at the sky come together in a harmony of light. With no need for further explanation, we invite you to step inside and meet their clouds. Once you leave, the sky will spread above us once more. Sometimes, the sky is clear, without a single speck of cloud. We see the same sky every day but one moment is never like another. May we escape the weight of reality and summon our old dreams of flying. Or another game of imagination with the clouds would also be nice.
